Electroplating is the deposition of metals
upon metallic surfaces by electrolysis for
decorative and/or protective purposes. It is
used in the preparation of printers' blocks,
`master' audio discs, and in many other
processes. A current is passed through a bath
containing a solution of a salt of the
plating metal, the object to be plated being
the cathode (negative terminal). The anode
(positive terminal) is either an inert
substance or the plating metal. Among the
metals most commonly used for plating are
zinc, nickel, chromium, cadmium, copper,
silver, and gold.
